Phylum: Charophyta Family: Desmidiaceae
Cosmarium ochthodes C.F.O. Nordstedt 1875
Part of a complex of similar taxa and easily confused with C. botrytis. It has a larger isthmus breadth and L/B ratio than the latter species, but these measurements occasionally overlap. Not easy to separate on environment either as they have been found together in some samples.
Cell dimensions: L: 60-80 µm; B: 54-64 µm.; Is: 18.5-24.6 µm; Th: c.35-37 µm, L/B: 1.24-1.30.
Frequently found in slightly acidic to slightly alkaline waters, in moorland pools and ephemeral winter floods.
