Cosmocladium saxonicum Desmid Species Outer Hebrides

Alage Outer Hebrides logo  Algae Outer Hebrides

Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Desmidiaceae

Cosmocladium saxonicum De Bary 1865

The main authors: West, West & Carter (1923), Prescott et al. (1981) and Coesel & Meesters (2007) all give identical measurements of L: 22-27, B: 18-20, Th: 12-15, Is: 3.5-7 µm. Nordstedt in De Toni (1889), as Cosmocladium quimbyii, gives a more precise L: 25 x B: 17-18 µm. Lenzenweger (2003) gives L: 22-25, B: 16-18, Th: 12-13 µm. With some duplication of data, it might suggest a scarce species. Certainly, here in the Outer Hebrides it is proving so. Found in nutrient-poor waters such as acidic loch-margins.
