Alage Outer Hebrides logo  Algae Outer Hebrides

Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Desmidiaceae

Euastrum ventricosum P.M. Lundell 1871

Semicells in rough outline semi-elliptical. Sinus deep and closed for the most part, basal angle rounded, lateral sides incurved. Subapical lobes rounded; apical lobes broadly domed with a closed median incision. Just above the isthmus of the semicell is a large protuberance with two smaller ones either side. Two more appear in the upper part of the semicell. There is a central scrobiculus in most cells, but occasionally lacking.
Cell dimensions: L: 100-136 µm; B: 52-80 µm; Is: 18-28 µm; Th: 33-48 µm; L/B: 1.60-1.90.
West & West (1905: 5) note: “This characteristic species is somewhat rare in the British Islands. In some parts of the west of Ireland, Skye, and in the Outer Hebrides, it occurs in large quantity along with E. inerne (Ralfs) Lund.” Both species are acidophilic and now regarded as rare, even here in the Outer Hebrides.
