Staurastrum orbiculare G. Meneghini ex J. Ralfs 1848

First described by Meneghini in Ralfs (1848: 125, pl. 21: 5) and illustrated by Jenner. Similar to Staurastrum ralfsii although that species is smaller, but there is overlap.
Cell dimensions: L: 40-62 µm; B: 34-52 µm; Is: 11-13 µm.
Widespread throughout Europe but more common in the Atlantic north-west. An acidophile but tolerant of circumneutral waters.
