A symmetrical cell, about as long and broad. It has spines along the edges of the major lobes in varying degrees of boldness.
Cell dimensions: L: 116-163 µm; B: 106-149 µm; Is: 17-23 µm; L/B: 1.10.
West & West (1905: 91) note: “This is the most abundant of the smaller British species of the genus …” This is nothing like as common as in the Wests’ days. An acidophile of moorland bogs and vegetated loch-margins. Rarely recorded.
