Phylum: Charophyta Family: Closteriaceae
Closterium parvulum C. Nägeli 1849
First described and illustrated by Nägeli (1849: 106, pl. 6c: 2). West & West (1904: 134) note: “Nägeli described the cell-wall as being very finely striated, but as we invariably find it perfectly smooth and colourless, we are inclined to believe that he included more than one species in his observations.”
Cell dimensions: L: 90-130 µm; B: 10-15 µm; Ap: 2.0-3.5 µm; Arc: 102-158; L/B: 6-15.
Common in mildly acidic to slightly alkaline habitats such as moorland bogs and pools.
