Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Desmidiaceae

Pleurotaenium ehrenbergii  (J. Ralfs) A. De Bary 1858

First described and illustrated in Ralfs (1848: 157, pl. 26: 4 & pl. 32: 4) as Docidium ehrenbergii, named in honour of Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876). It was later moved to Pleurotaenium by De Bary (1858: 75). The sides are usually parallel but might occasionally be slightly tapered towards the apices. There is sometimes a minor undulation above the swollen base. The apices are mostly truncate with a whorl of granules. West & West note: “… is the most frequent of the British species of the genus, and it exhibits considerable variability in both form and size.”
Cell dimensions: L: 260-500 µm; B: 20-30 µm; L/B: 12-20.
As in the Wests’ time, this is still a common species. An acidophile of moorland pools and bogs.
