Euastrum ansatum J. Ralfs 1848

Semicells are roughly pyramidal with the apical section with almost parallel sides. The sinus is closed for most of its length, basal angles are rounded, the lower part of the sides are slightly convex with an inconspicuous lobe. There is a noticeable lobe either side of the isthmus. In side view there is a protuberance on the same line as the lobe in face view. Chloroplast axile with one pyrenoid.
Cell dimensions: L: 60-95 µm; B: 33-45 µm; Is: 11-15 µm; Th: 24-32 µm; L/B: 1.80-2.20.
A cosmopolitan and variable species that has spawned many varieties. Some are probably distinct enough to be raised to species level. Others with slight variations maybe better absorbed into the nominate variety. Found in various habitats, occasionally quite acid, at other times in mildly acidic conditions.
