Haplotaenium minutum var. crassum (W. West) J. Cambra Sánchez 1998

First described and illustrated by West (1892: 130, pl. 20: 1) as Penium minutum var. crassum. More recently, it was moved to Haplotaenium by Cambra Sánchez (1998: 423). West & West (1904: 105) in their major flora, note: “Cells stout, sometimes a little inflated, 4-4½ times longer than their diameter, apices broad and truncate.” They give a few sites in Wales, Scotland and Ireland but it would seem to be a rare taxon.
Cell dimensions: L: 46-98 µm; B: 16-21 µm; L/B: 4-4.5.
Found in mildly acidic moorland pools and abandoned peat-cuttings.
