Cosmarium suborthogonum Desmid Species Outer Hebrides

Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Desmidiaceaa

Cosmarium suborthogonum  Raciborski

This was made a variety of Cosmarium impressulum by Taft (1945) based on the papillae in the centre of the semicells. It has little in common with that species, including being of a smaller size, hence Kouwets (in manuscript) has reinstated it as a separate species. It has more affinity with Cosmarium crenulatum in terms of outline and size and difficult to separate without an apical view. A feature of all finds to date is 10 lobes per semicell (inclusive of apical and basal) although some are ill-defined (C. crenulatum has 8). The status in largely unknown
