Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Mesotaeniaceae

Planotaenium interruptum (J. Ralfs) O.A. Petlovany & G.M. Palamar-Mordvintseva 2009

First described and illustrated in Ralfs (1848: 151, pl. 25: 4) as Penium interruptum. Lütkemüller (1902: 407) moved it to Netrium. Much later Petlovany & Palamar-Mordvintseva (2009: 101, pl. 23A; & 24: 1-4) moved it to Planotaenium. Coesel & Meesters (2023: 25) still list it as Netrium interruptum without any reference to Petlovany & Palamar-Mordvintseva’s revision. West & West (1904: 69) as Netrium interruptum note: “This species is well characterized by the traverse division of the chloroplasts, so that four are present in each cell, arranged in a longitudinal series.” They also support terminal vacuoles with a single gypsum crystal.
Cell dimensions: L: 150-320 µm; B: 30-65 µm; L/B: 5-6.
Infrequently found in moorland pools, abandoned peat-cutting and similar acidic habitats.
