Phylum: Charophyta   Family: Peniaceae

Penium exiguum W. West 1892

First described and illustrated by West (1892: 126, pl. 19: 17-18). Cells usually cylindrical with a median constriction (some cells have been encountered that are tumid in the centre). Apices dilate giving a capitate appearance. Cell-wall with girdle bands, but not always discernible, and covered with small to quite large, random, granules. Extra-long cell may be in the process of division.
Cell dimensions: L: 40-80(-100) µm; B: 8-14 µm; L/B: 4-8.
Encountered more often than P. cylindrus but still only infrequently recorded. Found in bogs and peaty pools plus loch-margins with vegetation.
