Staurastrum subcruciatum M.C. Cooke & A.W. Wills 1887

First described and illustrated by Cooke & Wills (1887: 148, pl. 51: 3). Wills collected extensively in the neighbourhood of Capel Curig, a mountainous area of north Wales. He made his collections available to Cooke for publication. Similar to the longer-spined forms of Staurastrum avicula but the former is smaller and the semicells are broader than long. West & West (1923: 42) have few records suggesting scarcity or confusion with similar species.
Cell dimensions: L: 27-36 µm; B: 33-40 µm; Is: 8-11 µm.
An infrequently recorded acidophile, found in moorland bogs and abandoned peat-cuttings.
