Pleurotaenium tridentulum (F. Wolle) W. West 1892

First described by Wolle (1884: 14) without illustration as Docidium tridentulum. Later moved by West (1892: 120) to Pleurotaenium. West & West (1904: 208, pl. 30: 5-6) note: “… This is one of the rarest British species of the genus and is well characterised by its small size and apical teeth.”
Cell dimensions: L: 200-320 µm; B: 12-17 µm; L/B: 15-20.
As in the Wests’ time, this is a rare desmid. Found in acidic habitats such as moorland pools and bogs, including with Sphagnum.
