Desmidium swartzii J. Ralfs 1848

Published in Ralfs (1848: 61, pl. 4) after an earlier description by Agardh. West, West & Carter (1923: 246), note that it’s the commonest species in the genus and specifically mention Harris in the Outer Hebrides as a capture site.
Cell dimensions: L: 12-21 µm; B: 35-50 µm.
Found in moorland pools, bogs and abandoned peat-cuttings, also in the plankton of loch-margins.
