Cosmarium subcucumis Schmidle 1893

The original concept by W. Schmidle (1893, p. 98, Pl. 4: 20-22) illustrated two distinctly different sized cells. He later suggested that only figure 22 was accurate. Later authors have broadened the size-parameters giving a broad concept. There would appear to be two distinct sized, without overlap and Kouwets (in manuscript) is proposing two new names at species rank. Both sizes are illustrated below. Found in mesotrophic lochs and moorland pools. Because of the confusion, distribution is not clear. It would appear the larger cells are more common in the Outer Hebrides.
